ASSURING PROJECT SUCCESS: SECRET SAUCE
By GREG GITHENS, PMP, NPDP

Requirements are fundamental to project success. The number 1 reason for project failure is poor requirements. Although the project manager may enter the requirements capture process late, the project manager is nevertheless accountable for the success of the project. This course will help the project manager accomplish two “must do’s”:

1) assure that there are clear exit criteria for the project (verifiable requirements)
2) recognize and avoid the many requirements-related pitfalls that plague many projects.

Session One Learning Objectives:

Unit 1 “Writing Detailed Requirements” - At the end of this unit, you will have knowledge of the essential elements that characterize a high-quality requirements statement.

Unit 2 “Avoiding Pitfalls” - At the end of this unit, you will be able to recognize and avoid the many requirements-related pitfalls that plague many projects

12:00 – Lunch Keynote:

TRANSFORMATION - IT TAKES MANY FORMS
By BARBARA FULLER, MBA, PMP

1:30pm – Session Two:

WIN/WIN NEGOTIATIONS THROUGHOUT YOUR PROJECT: POSITIVE COMMUNICATION FOR PROJECT SUCCESS
By Wallace Wilkins, PhD

Every time you open your mouth, you display your leadership. As Project Manager, how you speak to your teammates can engage them or drive them away—especially when they’re not your direct reports. Over-using the word, “No,” in your communications causes people to view you as negative. With that rejecting, negative attitude, you’ll miss opportunities for team cohesion and advancement. This skillshop will show you how to incorporate the principles of effective negotiation into your daily communication habits.

In successful negotiations, both parties win—no one walks away feeling like a defeated loser. You’ll learn how to reduce criticism in your communication and replace it with goal-focused, negotiation habits—like mentors use. Learn strategies to support and encourage your teammates even when they fall short of your aspirations. Monitor your own expectations to avoid distress, disappointment and blame—and the loss of time, energy and productivity when negotiations go sour.

Instead of managing angry communications after they erupt, your proactive negotiations can prevent many hostile episodes from occurring at all. Early in your project planning meetings, identify anger and conflicts as risk factors that can take your project off-track. By illuminating the one cause of anger that you can control, you’ll help yourself and others prevent hostile outbursts. By monitoring your self-confidence, you can negotiate positive outcomes with just about any personality type—even when the other person is angry. Even heated discussions can result in project advancement when you apply the ground rules used by professional mediators.

Enter your daily negotiations with a strategic, upbeat, “Yes” perspective to promote optimal outcomes, especially during periods of uncertainty and rapid change. You’ll practice a powerful communication method that will make people eager to hear your messages—without superficial fluff. With your consistent, win/win negotiation skills, you’re more likely to be on-time, on-budget with each project.

Features and benefits:

• Convert negative criticism into constructive communication
• Make win/win negotiations your daily strategy
• Engage setbacks from a value-added perspective
• Break the downward cycle of negativity
• Prevent angry communications
• Identify the business issue underlying each negotiation
• Identify and dismiss four popular myths about anger
• Let go of grudges
• Form a powerful, negotiation triangle
• Engage surprises and setbacks constructively
• Negotiate with any personality type
• Handle changing demands gracefully
• Apply your win/win communications at home, too

4:30pm – Day One Ends

SUCCESSFULLY TRANSFORMING YOUR ORGANIZATION: USING PROJECT MANAGEMENT SKILLS AND TOOLS
By BARBARA FULLER, MBA, PMP

Sometimes the people inside a dysfunctional organization don’t know that they are a part of a dysfunctional organization. To those on the outside, what may not seem normal to them may be the norm for those on the inside. When a new person joins the organization they have a choice. To stay or to leave; to stay and learn to survive by mimicking the existing norms or they can leave. Or a more radical choice is to stay and change the organization by becoming a catalyst for change
During this session, you will hear a true story told from the point of view of the person who lived the role of catalyst and witnessed the remarkable transformation. The story will be interwoven with exercises, reflections and revelations.

Session Three Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this program participants will be able to:

1. Recognize the symptoms of a dysfunctional organization
2. Apply Project and Process Management tools and skills to troubled organization
3. Understand why changing oneself or an organization is so hard
4. Apply leadership skills when change is imperative
5. Differentiate the deliverables of the Project Management Life Cycle versus the Product/Service Life Cycle

12:00 – Working Lunch

1:00pm – Session Four:

TOOLS OF THE TRADE – USE THEM OR PERISH
By LEE R. LAMBERT, PMP, CEO

This is a powerful, hands-on opportunity to consider real world applications of the two most powerful PM tools—not being used. After a careful lecture setup, students/teams will be asked to work and demonstrate their ability to take advantage of the power of the tools. Three specific challenges will be thoroughly examined:

1) Defining requirements
2) Estimating durations and budget
3) Creating a meaningful, integrated work flow schedule (that illustrates the vital multi-project, shared resource conflicts)

4:00pm – 4:30pm – Program Wrap Up/Giveaways/Adjourn

Registration fee includes breakfast, lunch and all supporting materials.

Continental breakfast and registration starts at 8:00am. Workshop begins at 8:30am. A working lunch will be served and the program will end at 4:30. The facility has a dress code, including collared shirts for the men and no jeans. Please contact them directly if you have any questions about the facility. Certificates of completion will be distributed at the end of the workshop. It will contain all of the information you will need to register your PDUs through PMI.
